As Tyler Guyton Enters the Spotlight, The Dallas Cowboys See a Bright Future
The Dallas Cowboys have reason to be excited about their newest addition to the offensive line. Tyler Guyton, selected 29th overall in the first round, has already begun to make a name for himself in training camp. Guyton, a rookie left tackle, comes with an impressive blend of intelligence, confidence, and physical prowess.
One element that sets Guyton apart is his swift adaptation to the Cowboys’ system. "His intelligence and confidence for sure. It's showing on the field, too. The guy has picked up everything we have thrown at him," said veteran quarterback Dak Prescott. His quick learning curve has not only impressed his teammates but has also been evident in his on-field performance.
Guyton's journey to the NFL began at the University of Oklahoma, where he played predominantly at right tackle, starting 13 of his 14 collegiate games. Now at left tackle for the Cowboys, he has shown exceptional skill during training camp, even managing to stonewall one of the league’s premier defenders, Micah Parsons, during a padded practice session. "I thought he had some nice reps against Micah," head coach Mike McCarthy noted.
The young tackle has not navigated this transition alone. His development has been closely supported by left guard Tyler Smith, who has acted as a mentor. "He's helped me out a lot. He's like a big brother to me," Guyton said. Smith, equally enthusiastic, commented, "It's not very often that you find a human being who measures how he does, 6-7, 330 and has light feet and can just move and just bully dudes. The sky truly is the limit for him and his development."
Guyton's remarkable journey hasn't been without hiccups. He missed three practices in a row due to illness but showed resilience by participating in a limited capacity upon his return. "I'm feeling better, for sure. I'm just under the weather, working my way back now," Guyton explained.
Off the field, Guyton's character and sense of humor have endeared him to teammates. His participation in a team jeopardy night showcased his quick thinking. "The dude jumped up there and spelled it as fast without any hesitation as I have ever seen. Still mind blown to be honest with you," Prescott recalled. Guyton also took part in a rookie karaoke session, performing "Mary Jane" by Rick James. "It's a song that everybody knows is groovy and that would work," Guyton said, adding a light-hearted note to his otherwise serious camp performance.
Looking to the future, the Cowboys have high expectations for Guyton, especially as he steps into the shoes of his predecessor, Tyron Smith. "He has to be Tyler Guyton. Doesn't really matter who played here before him... At the end of the day, you just need to be yourself and the best version of yourself," Prescott emphasized, highlighting the Cowboys' belief in their rookie's unique potential.
The upcoming joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams will provide another proving ground for Guyton. As the season draws nearer, all eyes in Dallas will be watching closely to see how this promising rookie continues to grow and contribute to the Cowboys' offensive line.
