Saquon Barkley Feels the Electric Atmosphere at Lincoln Financial Field
Saquon Barkley’s first steps out of the home tunnel at Lincoln Financial Field were met with a roar from over 50,000 fans, marking a monumental moment for the former Penn State standout and current New York Giants star. The experience at the Eagles' open practice brought back a wave of nostalgia and excitement for Barkley, reminiscent of his collegiate glory days.
“I tell these guys it's like college. If you think about it, when you leave college -- the NFL is on another level with the stadiums and the vibe. You never really get that college feeling, but you get that here,” Barkley shared, reflecting on the unique energy he felt at the practice.
For Barkley, the atmosphere at Lincoln Financial Field, located 200 miles southeast of Beaver Stadium, felt like a homecoming of sorts. Having previously emerged from the visitors' tunnel during his time at Penn State, and later as a Giant, this new experience stirred familiar emotions. “When I was in college, you didn't want anyone to come into Beaver Stadium and get a win there. You get that feel here. You know how much every week is, and how much that means, when you play at the Linc,” he added, underscoring the significance of the venue.
The impressive turnout for the Eagles’ open practice, which has grown to host over 50,000 fans in recent years, underscored the passion and unity of Philadelphia's fervent fan base. This overwhelming support has deeply resonated with players, boosting their excitement and motivation for the upcoming season.
For Trevor Keegan, the scene at Lincoln Financial Field paralleled the electric ambiance of Michigan Stadium. “It was awesome. I remember walking out there and they're introducing all the guys, I'm like 'Holy shit, this is so cool,’” Keegan recalled. The intensity of the moment wasn't lost on him, as he compared it to his college experience: “It was louder than Michigan Stadium with those 50,000 people. It was rocking.”
Barkley echoed these sentiments, highlighting the reciprocal relationship between the players and the fans. “I already knew how much love this city has, not just for this team, but all the teams around here. But for a practice to have 50,000 fans is truly insane. ... It's big. It helps us as a team. It kind of gives me that college feel again.”
The sense of community and unwavering support from Philly fans has fostered a strong bond between the players and their supporters. “You just hear about it every day how passionate the fans are for this team and the rest of the sports teams. It's awesome,” Keegan noted, capturing the essence of Philadelphia’s blue-collar spirit. “Blue collar, hard-working people that sports brings all together. It's one of the coolest things.”
Both Barkley and Keegan expressed their eagerness to give their all for such a dedicated fan base. “I'm excited to go out there and play for those guys, to play for this fanbase. Every week I'm gonna try to give them 100 percent and try to compete at a high level,” Barkley promised. Keegan, too, felt the intensity of the moment, saying, “You can feel it from the fans. I got goosebumps. It was so cool. I was so excited and I'm excited for the season.”
The Eagles' open practice has not only given fans a sneak peek of the upcoming season but also reignited the passion and drive within the players. The palpable energy at Lincoln Financial Field serves as a powerful reminder of the unbreakable connection between the team and its supporters, promising an exhilarating season ahead.
