Nakobe Dean's Stellar Camp Sets the Stage for a Promising Season
Sunday marked a turning point for Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean, who delivered a standout performance that put to rest any lingering doubts from a summer marred by a foot injury. Dean's impressive display was a testament to his determination and work ethic, traits that have helped him steadily earn his way back into first-team reps.
Dean's journey this season is a stark contrast to last year. Initially handed a starting linebacker role, this time around, he's had to fight for his place. His grueling offseason regimen, which saw him training five days a week until camp began, is paying dividends. "I didn't have a day off, I didn't have an offseason. It was five days a week until training camp started as far as getting that foot right, getting better. It's like I'm not back, I'm better," Dean said.
The turning point during Saturday's practice came early. On the first play of 11-on-11s, Dean tackled running back Will Shipley following a pass reception. Shortly after, he disrupted a pass intended for DeVonta Smith, showcasing his versatility and impact on the field. These moments highlighted Dean's physical approach, an aspect the Eagles have been yearning for in their defense.
Dean attributes much of his recent success to new linebackers coach Bobby King. "He made it a main emphasis of block destruction, of blitzing because Vic's (Fangio, the defensive coordinator) been calling our number, and tackling is a universal thing. We don't want no missed tackles, definitely not at the linebacker position, so it's been kind of universal topic we've been on in camp," he explained.
Fangio's defensive philosophy appears to be the perfect fit for Dean, as it has allowed him to embrace and hone his physical playing style. Despite the limited tackling in camp, Dean remains committed to adding a physical edge to every play. "We don't tackle as much in camp, so you try to thud as much as you can. In past years, I feel like I two-handed touch always. I want to thud," he noted.
The linebacker has also won over the offensive side of the team with his aggressiveness. "Offensive guys have embraced it. They embraced the toughness. They want a feel. The offensive starters, they haven't played in the preseason (games). So the first time they get hit, they don't want it to be Week 1," said Dean. His approach not only prepares him but also ensures his teammates are game-ready come the regular season.
Dean's effectiveness as a linebacker is multi-faceted. "The type of linebacker I am, I feel like you need to be able to do everything. You need to be able to cover, you need to be able to fill that A-gap, you need to be able to blitz the quarterback. And I feel like those are things I do good," he stated. This versatility makes him a pivotal component of the Eagles' defense.
As he edges closer to securing the starting linebacker position for Week 1, Dean remains focused on his day-to-day efforts. "I want to play. And I want to be the first one that plays. But I can't control that. The only thing I can control is what I come out here and do every day, work hard and continue to get better," he remarked. This mindset has driven him through the offseason and is a key reason why his camp performance aligns with his expectations. "I feel like I've had the kind of camp that I'm supposed to have," he concluded.
Philadelphia Eagles fans and coaches alike are eager to see how Dean's hard work and dedication will translate into regular-season success. With his combination of physical play, versatility, and relentless work ethic, Dean is poised to make a significant impact on the field this season, embodying the toughness and aggressiveness the Eagles defense has been looking to establish.
