Chicago Bears' cornerback Jaylon Johnson finds himself fueled by a sense of unfairness and determination as he heads into another NFL season. Despite stellar performances, Johnson was notably absent from the NFL's Top 100 list, a snub that he refuses to take lightly.
Pro Bowl and All-Pro Honors, but No Top 100 Entry
In the 2023 season, Johnson earned second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl bid, validating his growth and impact on the field. The cornerback recorded a career-high four interceptions, including his first pick-six, and forced one fumble. Statistics further cement his defensive prowess; he held opponents to a 50.9 passer rating when targeted and allowed just a 55% completion rate.
Yet, the NFL's recognition system failed to reflect his achievements. The Top 100 list included only two Bears players — wide receiver Keenan Allen at No. 51 and defensive end Montez Sweat at No. 82. Johnson’s absence from the list has generated substantial disbelief and frustration for the player.
Jaylon Johnson Speaks Out
"Bull----," Johnson stated bluntly after discovering the omission. "It's bull----. There ain't no way. I don't know how you make Pro Bowl, All-Pro and not [be] a Top 100 guy. I could've been 101 I guess, but goddamn, [New York Jets quarterback] Aaron Rodgers didn't even play in the season and he was voted [92nd]."
Johnson is candid about his feelings of disrespect. "I mean, hey, everybody makes mistakes, it ain't just the media that do it. Players clearly — if they voted for it — they made some god damn mistakes. But it is what it is. At the end of the day I know the truth and it's alright, I got some more for them."
The cornerback’s frustration stems not just from a personal standpoint but also from a matter of professional respect. "It's disrespectful because I go out there, line up and I know receivers go out there and can't say that I'm not one of best players that they play against," Johnson expressed.
Fuel for Motivation
This perceived slight is poised to act as a catalyst for Johnson in the coming season. He is unequivocal about the impact of the snub on his motivation levels. "The snub would '100%' motivate him as he gears up for another year with the Bears," he stated. "So I mean, whatever it is, it happened. Doing it wouldn't have moved me to where I'm complacent, but just to see it — ain't no way there are 100 guys who are better. Ain't no way. Especially guys who didn't play, who were hurt, played half- ain't no f---ing way. Excuse my language. Ain't no way. Ain't no way."
Looking Forward
The road ahead for Johnson involves not only proving his critics wrong but also justifying his lucrative four-year, $76 million contract extension secured in March. As he steps onto the field for another strenuous season, Bears fans and NFL enthusiasts alike will be closely watching. For Johnson, every game is now more than just a match; it's an arena where he gets to reaffirm his value and resilience.
