CeeDee Lamb Returns to Cowboys with $136-Million Extension
The anticipation surrounding CeeDee Lamb's contract extension reached its peak as the star wide receiver rejoined the Dallas Cowboys, securing a four-year, $136-million deal. This lucrative extension not only solidifies Lamb's future with the team but also makes him the second-highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL, tied with defensive end Nick Bosa. Lamb's journey to this moment was marked by a holdout that saw him miss several key off-season activities.
The contract ensures Lamb an average annual salary of $34 million, with $100 million in guaranteed money and a substantial $38 million signing bonus. Lamb's new salary places him just behind Minnesota Vikings' wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who earns an average of $35 million per year.
A Holdout to Remember
During the holdout, which saw Lamb miss organized team activities, minicamp, and training camp in Oxnard, California, the star receiver trained independently in Texas and South Florida. Despite the physical absence, Lamb remained mentally connected with his teammates and coaches through digital means. "He was plugged in. I woke up some mornings, and he texts me like 'Good morning bro, have a great day.' Or, he'll tell me about something that happened on the field," said teammate Jalen Tolbert.
Maintaining peak physical condition was also a priority for Lamb, who used the holdout period to add 15 pounds of muscle. "I've got some body armor on me. I can take a couple more hits. I'm prepared for my opportunities," Lamb stated confidently.
The Reintroduction
The noise of Lamb's reintroduction echoed through the Ford Center, as teammates were elated to see him back. "We just heard a bunch of cheering, and we turn around, and he's [Lamb] walking through things like 'It's great to be back,'" recounted Tolbert. The joy was palpable not just among the players, but also within the organization and fanbase, who had been under a cloud of anxiety during Lamb's absence.
Any concerns about Lamb's dedication were promptly dismissed. Head Coach Mike McCarthy made it clear that Lamb's role within the team remains unchanged. "CeeDee's role will not change. He was our premier receiver last year. Our approach with him will be similar. I don't see that changing," McCarthy asserted.
Staying Connected
Even while training away from the team, Lamb made it a point to practice with quarterback Dak Prescott. The two utilized Prescott's backyard field to ensure their timing and chemistry remained sharp. "We got our reps in for sure. The best thing about it, him having a field in his backyard. So anytime I came back home [from training in Florida], it was time [to throw with Prescott]," Lamb explained.
Throughout the process, Lamb emphasized his gratitude towards the organization and the fans for their support. "I can't really put it into words. I tell them I'm grateful to be here every moment of the day. This whole process was very crazy for me, as we all know. Very bittersweet," Lamb shared. This sentiment highlights the emotional rollercoaster that he and the fanbase experienced during the holdout.
Looking Ahead
With the contract now behind him, Lamb's focus is squarely on football. "We had a businessman conversation. Just had to clear the room. Everything is behind us. I'm not worried about nothing. We got what we needed to get done. Now it's time for me to go ball," Lamb stated resolutely.
Lamb's commitment to the team extends beyond his performance on the field. He has also urged Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones to secure quarterback Dak Prescott's contract extension, highlighting the importance of stability in key positions. "You look at our numbers together, they're at the top of the charts. I have no doubt that they're going to get a deal done. We all know that I want Dak here. Jerry wants Dak here, too, so let's just get this under control and kill the speculation and let's go win," Lamb passionately urged.
The excitement surrounding Lamb’s return is evident. As the Cowboys gear up for the season, they do so with one of their key weapons back in the fold, ready to make an impact. The extended contract not only rewards Lamb for his hard work and dedication but also sets the stage for the Cowboys to continue building towards their championship aspirations.
