As the Arizona Cardinals prepare for their upcoming season, there is a notable sense of optimism surrounding the team, particularly in regards to the health and readiness of their star quarterback, Kyler Murray.
Just a year ago, the Cardinals were starting their first season under the guidance of head coach Jonathan Gannon. At that time, Murray was sidelined, recovering from a debilitating ACL injury he sustained late in the 2022 campaign. The injury had left a significant void in the Cardinals' offensive lineup, and his absence was keenly felt throughout the team.
During the offseason, Murray committed himself fully to his recovery process. Working diligently with the team's trainers, he aimed to regain his full health and return to peak performance. Unlike the previous offseason, Murray was an active participant in the team's program this time around, making significant strides in both his physical rehabilitation and his integration into the team's strategy.
Reflecting on Murray's dedication, head coach Jonathan Gannon couldn't hide his admiration. "Physically and mentally, I mean, he looks damn good. He looks damn good," Gannon stated. This sentiment is shared widely within the organization, with many noting the noticeable improvement in Murray's condition.
When Murray made his return to the field last season, his numbers were solid, albeit not spectacular. He completed 65.7% of his passes, averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. His performance included 10 touchdowns against five interceptions, in addition to contributing 244 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. These statistics, while commendable considering his recent return from injury, were achieved without the benefit of a full offseason program or training camp.
Gannon emphasized the challenges Murray faced last season. "You know, 'cause you gotta think, he played really good football for us; he had never taken a snap in this offense until Atlanta [in Week 10], you know what I mean, his first game back. I mean, he had a couple weeks of practice leading up to that, but no offseason program, no training camp. No however many games we played without him. Couple weeks of practice and then, you're going, 'Let's play football,'" Gannon recounted.
This season, however, tells a different story. Murray's offseason participation has been full, giving him a much-needed opportunity to familiarize himself with the team's offensive schemes and establish better rhythm with his teammates. "So, I think from a mental and physical standpoint, right now where he's at, to even when he got back last year or even where he finished last year, I think he's leaps and bounds ahead," Gannon noted, highlighting the quarterback's significant progress.
The Cardinals have also bolstered their arsenal by adding rookie wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., a move that is expected to enhance their offensive capabilities. This addition, coupled with Murray's improved health and readiness, paints a hopeful picture for the team's prospects.
Gannon's respect for Murray extends beyond his physical abilities. He praises Murray's dedication and mental toughness. "What I know about the guy, my relationship with him when I got this job: His will to win is extremely high," Gannon observed. "And if you detail out and lay out for him what is needed from him to improve himself, the offense and the team, he is one thousand percent willing to do that."
Gannon's confidence in Murray's leadership is evident. "So, I love the guy, because he's done everything that I've asked of him and more. He's been a phenomenal leader on and off the field -- not just with the offense, but with the entire team," Gannon concluded. This endorsement from the head coach underscores Murray's importance to the team and his role in fostering a culture of dedication and excellence.
As the Cardinals stand on the brink of a new season, the anticipation surrounding Murray's return is palpable. With his tenacity and skill, coupled with a supportive and strengthened team, the prospects seem bright. The journey ahead will undoubtedly have its challenges, but with Murray at the helm, the Cardinals are poised to tackle them head-on, showcasing a blend of resilience and talent that could define their season.
