Kimbrel Designated for Assignment; Bryan Baker Promoted
In a move designed to shake up their bullpen, the Baltimore Orioles announced on Wednesday that they have designated veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel for assignment. The 36-year-old pitcher had been struggling significantly in recent weeks, culminating in a catastrophic outing against the San Francisco Giants where he allowed six runs on three hits and two walks.
Struggles on the Mound
Before the All-Star break, Kimbrel's season looked promising with a respectable ERA of 2.80. However, his performance has plummeted over his last 18 appearances, where his ERA ballooned to a concerning 10.59. During this stretch, Kimbrel gave up 22 runs (20 earned) on 22 hits and 15 walks, striking out 20 batters across 17 innings. These figures have brought his overall ERA for the season to 5.33.
Given his decline, Orioles management felt it was time for a change. Kimbrel had also been removed from his role as closer, a position now held by Seranthony DomÃnguez for the past month.
Team Performance and Challenges
The Orioles have had their share of struggles this season, holding a 26-29 record since the All-Star break. This has placed them four games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East, though they do maintain a four-game lead in the AL wild-card race. General Manager Mike Elias acknowledged the difficulties, stating, "The mojo that we've had has just drifted away from us the last few months."
Elias further discussed the downturn saying, "There are reasons for it that are obvious, but a lot of it is we've got people here that are experiencing a downturn -- whether it's themselves or the team."
Baker Steps Up
In the wake of Kimbrel's departure, the Orioles have promoted Bryan Baker from Triple-A Norfolk. The 29-year-old right-hander brings with him a considerable amount of major league experience, having made 130 appearances in his career, 17 of which came this season. Baker boasts an overall ERA+ of 108, indicating he can be a reliable addition to the Orioles' bullpen as they push towards the playoffs.
Kimbrel's Legacy
Despite his recent struggles, Kimbrel's career numbers remain impressive. He ranks fifth all-time in saves and second among active pitchers in that category. However, this season marks his third since 2019 with an ERA+ below 90, suggesting a notable decline in his effectiveness on the mound.
The Orioles' decision to designate Kimbrel for assignment marks a significant change, but one they hope will revitalize their bullpen as they strive for a strong finish to the season.
